Today’s short venture to Bowen Park was nothing short of magical, with sunshine showers enhancing the beauty of the landscape.
The day started with a wet autumn morning, but in the early afternoon, the sun begin to peek through. Our little family trio – Joanna, myself, and our vivacious 2.5-year-old, made our way along trails transformed by the season’s touch. Zosia, bundled in her bright pink muddy buddy, immediately pulled us toward the duck pond, her favourite spot. As a congregation of ducks stood waiting, her infectious excitement never fails to warm my heart.
The recent downpours had turned our usually serene lower falls into a commanding presence. The water cascaded with unexpected force, creating a symphony of rushing water that seemed to harmonize with the rustling of leaves overhead. The surrounding foliage had fully embraced autumn’s palette – maples blazing in fierce reds and oranges, while the alders contributed their subtle golds. As we wound our way up toward the upper falls, nature orchestrated a perfect moment. The clouds parted, and sunshine broke through the canopy in distinct rays, like spotlights designed by a master lighting director. These beams caught the upper falls at just the right angle, illuminating the centuries-old moss that clung to the rocks.
The river had swollen beyond its usual boundaries, spreading out into a shallow plain that beckoned to be explored. The photographer in me couldn’t resist the call. I found myself carefully picking my way through the cool water, seeking that perfect angle where all the elements aligned. Behind me, I could hear Zosia’s excited commentary, her voice carrying over the sound of rushing water as she stood at the edge with Joanna, pointing and chattering about daddy’s adventure.
Seeing her mounting curiosity, I made my way back to shore and scooped her up in my arms, carefully carrying her out into the shallow water. Her initial apprehension quickly gave way to wonder as I showed her the photos on my camera and then pointed out the real-life scene before us. The look of pure amazement on her face, framed by wayward curls catching the sunlight, was worth more than any photograph I could have taken. These are the moments that seem to freeze in time – standing in the cool river water, holding my daughter, watching her discover the beauty of nature while Joanna captured her own photos of our little adventure from the shore. The warmth of the sun, the sound of the falls, Zosia’s delighted giggles, and the vibrant autumn scenery around us created a perfect snapshot of family joy that I’ll carry with me long after the seasons change.
