Frequently Asked Questions

Where is 5040 Peak located?

5040 Peak is located in the mountains near Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. At 1,536 metres (5,040 feet), the summit offers 360-degree panoramic views of surrounding peaks, Triple Peak, the Broken Group Islands in Barkley Sound, and the Coastal Range on the mainland.[1]

How do I get to 5040 Peak trailhead?

From Port Alberni, access is via Marion Creek Forest Service Road. Drive approximately 9 km on the logging road to reach the trailhead. A 4×4 or high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended as road conditions can be rough — most standard vehicles can only reach about 6 km before needing to walk.[1]

How long is the 5040 Peak hike?

The hike is approximately 6.9 km (4.3 miles) out-and-back with 891 metres of elevation gain. Most hikers complete it in 5–8 hours as a day hike, though overnight trips to the ACC hut are popular.[2]

How difficult is the 5040 Peak trail?

The trail is rated as hard. The first section to Cobalt Lake is steep with significant scrambling over tree roots and rocks due to trail erosion. Above Cobalt Lake, the trail continues uphill through alpine terrain with less root exposure.[3]

What can I see at Cobalt Lake?

Cobalt Lake is a stunning crystal-clear alpine lake with a turquoise tint, located partway up the trail. It's an excellent spot for swimming in summer and makes a great rest stop or turnaround point for those not continuing to the summit.[4]

Is there accommodation on 5040 Peak?

Yes, the Alpine Club of Canada operates the 5040 Alpine Hut near the summit. The hut is bookable through ACC and offers a memorable overnight experience. There's also an upper campground with limited tent sites — expect crowds on summer long weekends.[5]

When is the best time to hike 5040 Peak?

July through September offers the best conditions when snow has melted and weather is stable. The trail may have snow into early summer and conditions can be muddy in shoulder seasons. Check current hut conditions at the ACC website before attempting.[6]

What should I bring to 5040 Peak?

Bring proper hiking boots, layers for changing alpine weather, plenty of water and food, navigation tools (GPS/map), sun protection, and emergency supplies. This is a backcountry hike with limited cell service — be prepared for changing conditions.

Are dogs allowed on the 5040 Peak trail?

Yes, dogs are permitted on the trail. Keep them on leash and bring water and supplies for your pet. The terrain is rugged so ensure your dog is fit for challenging hikes.
