Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Cascade Falls located?
Cascade Falls is a seasonal waterfall within Gowlland Tod Provincial Park, located along the Cascade Trail between McKenzie Bight beach and the McKenzie Bight trailhead. This is the Cascade Falls near Victoria—not to be confused with the larger Cascade Falls Regional Park near Mission.[1]
How do I get to Cascade Falls?
From the McKenzie Bight parking area on Ross-Durrance Road, hike down via the Timberman Trail to McKenzie Bight, then return via the Cascade Trail which passes directly by the falls. Alternatively, descend via Cascade Trail first to see the falls on the way down.
When is the best time to see the waterfall flowing?
Winter and spring offer the best water flow when rainfall is abundant. By late summer, the falls may be reduced to a trickle or completely dry. If seeing the waterfall is a priority, plan your visit during the wetter months (November–April).[2]
How difficult is the trail to Cascade Falls?
The Cascade Trail is rated moderate and is the steeper of the two main routes in this area. The trail follows the path of a creek with some rough, rocky sections. Sturdy footwear with good grip is essential, especially when wet.[1]
What can I see at Cascade Falls?
A viewpoint along the Cascade Trail offers a good view of the waterfall as it cascades down the rocky creek bed. The surrounding forest is lush second-growth Douglas fir with moss-covered rocks and ferns.
Can I swim at Cascade Falls?
The pool at the base of the falls is small and shallow—not suitable for swimming. For swimming, continue down to McKenzie Bight where you can access Saanich Inlet (cold water, no lifeguards).
Are dogs allowed on the Cascade Trail?
Yes, dogs are permitted on leash throughout Gowlland Tod Provincial Park, including the Cascade Trail.
What's the best loop route to see both the falls and the beach?
The recommended loop is: Start at McKenzie Bight parking → descend via Timberman Trail (gradual) → explore McKenzie Bight beach → ascend via Cascade Trail past the falls → return to parking. Total distance approximately 3.4 km.[3]
