Cathedral Grove is the old‑growth forest at the heart of MacMillan Provincial Park. It is one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas‑fir on Vancouver Island, with trees up to 800 years old and more than 9 metres in circumference.
The grove straddles both sides of Highway 4 between Parksville and Port Alberni on central Vancouver Island. It is roughly 25 km west of Qualicum Beach and 16 km east of Port Alberni.
Drive Highway 4 toward Port Alberni. As you enter MacMillan Provincial Park, you will see signed parking areas on both sides of the highway. Pull fully into the lots and use caution when crossing the road, as traffic can be fast and continuous.
Most visitors spend 20–40 minutes walking the short loops and stopping at interpretive signs. If you enjoy photography or slower forest bathing, plan longer.
Many sections are relatively flat, wide gravel or boardwalk and can be manageable for strollers and some mobility aids. Surfaces can be uneven, muddy, or slippery after rain. Check BC Parks updates if you need detailed accessibility information.
Yes. The short, gentle loops and dramatic trees make it an excellent stop for families and older visitors. Keep everyone on the trail and watch for roots and wet sections.
Leashed dogs are welcome on the trails. Keep them on path, out of sensitive areas, and under control around other visitors.
MacMillan Provincial Park is open in all seasons, though winter storms or maintenance may occasionally close sections of trail or parking. Always check the BC Parks page for current advisories before a trip.
Wear comfortable walking shoes with some grip, and bring a light rain layer—this is temperate rainforest. A camera and a sense of unhurried time are highly recommended.
Stay on designated trails, avoid climbing over fences or onto root systems, keep noise down, and pack out all litter. This small park sees heavy use, so low‑impact behaviour helps preserve it for future visitors.
