Hornby Island is a laid-back Gulf Island paradise known for Tribune Bay's stunning white sand beach (often called "Canada's Hawaii"), a vibrant arts community, organic farms, Saturday farmers market, 70+ km of hiking and biking trails, and three provincial parks.
Hornby Island is located in the northern Gulf Islands, off the east coast of Vancouver Island in the Strait of Georgia. It's accessed via two ferries—first from Buckley Bay to Denman Island, then from Denman to Hornby.
Take BC Ferries from Buckley Bay (between Parksville and Courtenay on Hwy 19) to Denman Island (10 min), then drive across Denman and take a second ferry to Hornby Island (10 min). Total transit time is approximately 45 minutes plus wait times.
Reservations are not available for these routes. Ferries operate on a first-come, first-served basis. In summer, arrive at Buckley Bay early—waits of 1–2 sailings are common, especially on weekends.
Tribune Bay Provincial Park features the island's most famous beach—a stunning crescent of white sand with warm, shallow water. It's consistently ranked among the best beaches in British Columbia and is sometimes called "Little Hawaii."
Top hiking destinations include Helliwell Provincial Park (5 km coastal bluff loop with dramatic views), Mount Geoffrey Regional Park (summit trails through old-growth forest), and various community trails. The island has over 70 km of trails.
Popular activities include swimming at Tribune Bay, hiking Helliwell and Mount Geoffrey parks, browsing the Saturday farmers market, kayaking, cycling quiet roads, visiting local art galleries, diving, and dining at farm-to-table restaurants.
Yes! The warm, shallow waters of Tribune Bay are perfect for children. The island also offers nature exploration, wildlife watching, and a relaxed, safe atmosphere ideal for family vacations.
Summer (July–August) offers the warmest water and best beach weather. The Saturday market runs May through September. Shoulder seasons are quieter with fewer tourists but still beautiful for hiking.
The Hornby Island Farmers Market runs Saturdays from May through September and features local produce, artisan crafts, baked goods, live music, and a community gathering atmosphere. It's a highlight of island life.
Yes, accommodations range from B&Bs and vacation rentals to camping and glamping. Book well in advance for summer visits, as the island is extremely popular and options fill up quickly.
Common sightings include eagles, seals, sea lions (especially at Boyle Point on nearby Denman), various seabirds, and occasionally whales passing through the Strait of Georgia. The waters around Hornby are also excellent for diving.
