Where is McKenzie Bight located?
McKenzie Bight is a scenic bay on the eastern shore of Saanich Inlet within Gowlland Tod Provincial Park, located in the Highlands area northwest of Victoria, British Columbia. The park protects over 1,200 hectares of coastal Douglas-fir forest.[1]
How do I get to McKenzie Bight?
From Victoria, drive north on the Trans-Canada Highway and turn onto Millstream Road, then follow Ross-Durrance Road to the McKenzie Bight parking area. The trailhead is well-signed with a gravel parking lot.
What trails lead to McKenzie Bight?
The most popular route is the McKenzie Bight Trail Loop (3.4 km), which descends via the shaded Timberman Trail, reaches the beach, and returns via the steeper Cascade Trail past Cascade Falls. You can also do an out-and-back on just the McKenzie Bight Trail.[2]
What can I do at McKenzie Bight?
The rocky beach is ideal for picnicking, swimming (cold water, no lifeguards), and exploring tide pools. Many visitors kayak to the bight from nearby launch points. The forested trails offer excellent birdwatching and nature photography.
Is the hike to McKenzie Bight difficult?
The trail is rated moderate due to 167 m of elevation change. The descent via Timberman Trail is gradual, but the return via Cascade Trail is steeper with some rough sections. Proper hiking footwear is recommended, especially in wet conditions.[3]
What is Cascade Falls?
Cascade Falls is a scenic waterfall along the Cascade Trail between McKenzie Bight and the parking area. Water flow is best in winter and spring; the falls may be dry in late summer. A viewpoint offers a good vantage of the cascading water.
