Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park is one of Vancouver Island's most popular provincial parks, featuring over 2 km of stunning sandy beach, warm shallow waters at low tide, old-growth Douglas fir forest, and a highly sought-after campground with 250+ sites nestled among towering trees.
Rathtrevor Beach is located just south of Parksville on Vancouver Island, approximately 35 km north of Nanaimo. The park address is 1240 Rath Rd, Parksville, BC.
From Highway 19, take exit 51 for Parksville. Follow signs to Rathtrevor Road, then turn right onto Rath Road which leads directly into the park. From Nanaimo, it's about 30 minutes; from Victoria, approximately 2 hours via Highway 1 and Highway 19.
At low tide, the ocean recedes almost a kilometre, revealing vast sandy flats ideal for beachcombing and exploring tide pools. When the tide returns over the sun-warmed sand, the water becomes perfect for swimming. The park also features majestic old-growth woodland and beautiful ocean sunsets.
Summer (June–September) offers the warmest water and best beach weather. Check tide tables—low tide reveals the most beach area. Spring and fall are quieter with excellent birdwatching. The park is open year-round, though winter camping rates are reduced.
Book through the BC Parks reservation system (Discover Camping). Reservations open on a 3-month rolling window before your arrival date. Summer sites fill extremely quickly—book as early as possible. Camping fees are $35/night (vehicle camping) or $22/night (walk-in tent sites).
Day-use access is free. Camping fees apply for overnight stays. Extra vehicle parking is available for a fee ($12/night).
The park offers flush toilets, three shower buildings, a sani-station ($5), playground, nature house, picnic tables, two reservable picnic shelters, and a large day-use area. Campsites, showers, toilets, beach access, and day-use parking are wheelchair accessible.
No dogs are permitted on the beach year-round in the day-use area. In the campground beach area, dogs are prohibited from February 15 to April 30 (Brant wildlife viewing season). When allowed, dogs must be on leash.
Popular activities include swimming in warm shallow waters, beachcombing and tide pool exploring, walking the forest trails, birdwatching (especially during Brant goose migration in spring), camping under old-growth trees, and watching spectacular sunsets over the beach.
Yes! Rathtrevor is ideal for families. The shallow warm waters are safe for children, the extensive beach at low tide is perfect for playing in the sand, and all campsites are within a five-minute walk of the beach. The playground and nature house add to its family appeal.
Alternative camping is available at nearby Englishman River Falls Park (13 km away) or Little Qualicum Falls Park (24 km away). Both parks accept reservations.
